Summary:  The World Digital Library (WDL) has  the mission statement:  The World Digital Library makes available on the Internet, free of charge and in multilingual forms, significant primary materials from countries and cultures around the world.”   The website provides and promotes international and intercultural understanding; expands the volume and variety of cultural content on the Internet; provides resources for educators, scholars, and general audiences; and builds capacity in partner institutions to narrow the digital divide within and between countries..

Contents:  This website contains information about the various geographic regions around the world.  When on the homepage the user searches by a world map and a timeline.  The contents in the website are organized by the various geographic regions on a map.  In each region of the map, there are countries groupings.  The regions all have content-rare books, maps, manuscripts, photographs, prints, sound recordings, and films about the countries in the region.  When you use the region you click on the images to expand the culture and you can select what item to view.

When searching the browser on this site, the options are place, time, topic, type of item, and institution.  You can even select what language you are searching in from the options of English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, Russian, and Chinese.  The category options to search are books, journals, manuscripts, map motion pictures, prints and photographs, and sound recording.  In addition to these browser, you can type in a search box too.

Strengths:   A strength for this website is the easy to use accessibility.  There are numerous options to search from and easy methods to search.  This means that people that are information illterate  and not as experienced can search easily.  In addition, this would be a great site for elementary students when completing research projects.

Weaknesses:  Older computers might not be able to access the full information this site has to offer.  It requires users to have a Javascript-enabled browser.  This means that some of the computers that schools have, which are older due to financial issues, might not be able to work these site links.

Best Features:  The best feature of this resource in my opinion is the timeline control.  This timeline control helps to range the years you are searching for information from.  This will help narrow down information when searching.  the best thing about this is the easy way to operate.  All the user has to do is drag the green box to the left and right to highlight the time period being searched.

Focus on the timeline on the home page with a specific time period selected

Overall Ratings:  Overall, I would rate this website 4 out of 5.  Searching on this site is fairly easy, but there are some types of information that might not be able to operate on certain types of browsers.  I know that I used my Mac to search some on this website and the pictures would not open, but they did open on my PC.
